Ride In Harmony
Colleen offers basic and advanced training for horses of all ages. She approaches training holistically, using a blend of classical dressage and natural horsemanship. She is very observant and careful attention is given to each horse’s personality, age, physical condition and background. Protective leg boots or other similar equipment is used as needed. The way your horse is built and moves is assessed, and any prior injuries or limitations are taken into consideration.
Colleen treats each horse as if it is her own, with respect and dignity, and expects the same in return. The training your horse receives is discussed in advance and free private lessons are scheduled with you, too. Similar to a parent being involved in a child’s education at school, it is imperative that the owner know how, what and why their horse is learning. Her goals are 1) to produce willing, happy horses that enjoy working and being around people, and 2) that their owner enjoy their horses just as much!
Her belief is that groundwork is the foundation of training. Groundwork consists of lunging, leading, tying, grooming, picking up feet, brushing, and giving to pressure. Good manners are expected and encouraged, using positive reinforcement. Horses are given every opportunity for success and are praised often. Exercises are set up to reward the horse for trying, not to punish him for guessing.
An evaluation of the saddle, bridle and bit is completed and monitored. A horse (just like a person) that is uncomfortable, scared, overly tired or in pain cannot effectively learn. Referrals to equine chiropractors, dentists, massage therapists and veterinarians are made if needed.
Colleen works with all types of horses, including gaited breeds. She limits training to two horses per month to maintain high standards.
